Social Security Expands Fast-Track Disability Processes

"In practical terms, this means that this year 100,000 to 125,000 disabled Americans -- those with the most severe disabilities -- will be approved for benefits in about 10 days instead of waiting the three to four months it typically takes for an initial decision," Commissioner Astrue said. "These initiatives are truly a lifeline for those who need it most."

So they are approved in 10 days instead of three to four months, but there is still a five-month waiting period, so the first checks are not received until seven months after onset. This is a fraud on the American public, misleading them into thinking that payments are actually received more quickly. And resources are misallocated to perpretrate this.

  2. Thank you for your comment. You are correct about the waiting period - but there are rules in place so that in certain situations, a person can receive a cash payment more quickly. These are called "Immediate Payments" or IP's. To find out more about these payments, see POMS RS 02801.010 and POMS SI 02004.100 . You could also contact me or your local WIPA directly.
